BACKGROUND
There has been concern about the application of ice to the site of injection
after the administration of epinephrine via an EpiPen®. Some NLS Instructors
have raised a concern that applying ice to site of injection might inhibit
circulation and subsequently undermine the previous concern for quick
dispersal of medication. After research conducted by the BC Branch and
our medical advisor, Dr. Steve Beerman, we are eliminating the application
of ice post administration of epinephrine. While there is no indication
that applying ice will make a difference, we have concluded that following
the recommendations of the manufacturer are the most prudent ones to take. |
CONTEXTE
Certaines personnes nous avait fait part de leur inquiétude quant
à l’application de glace à l’endroit où
une injection d’épinéphrine avait été
effectuée par le biais d’un EpiPen. Un certain nombre de
moniteurs SN nous ont indiqué que cette procédure risquait
de ralentir la circulation sanguine et par conséquent retarder
une rapide dispersion du médicament. La division de la CB et notre
conseiller médical le Dr Steve Beerman ont effectué une
recherche à ce sujet suite à laquelle nous avons convenu
d’éliminer l’application de glace après une
injection d’épinéphrine. Il n’existe aucune
preuve que l’application de glace peut avoir un tel impact, mais
nous avons conclu qu’il est plus prudent de suivre les recommandations
du manufacturier à ce sujet. |
STATEMENT
Our practice for the administration of epinephrine if the victim requires
assistance is as follows: 1. Remove the grey safety cap from the EpiPen®
. 2. Press the tip of the pen into the outer thigh of the victim until
there is a “click.” 3. Hold the pen in place for 10 seconds.
4. Massage the site of injection for quick dispersal of the medication.
5. Dispose the needle safely in a biohazard sharps container. If no sharps
container is available, bend the needle on a hard surface and dispose
of it safely. |
ÉNONCÉ
Si la victime a besoin d’aide pour utiliser son auto-injecteur,
procédez de la façon suivante : 1. Enlever le capuchon gris
de sécurité de l’EpiPen®. 2. Appuyer la pointe
de l’auto-injecteur sur la partie extérieure de la cuisse
de la victime jusqu’à ce que vous entendiez un « déclic
». 3. Maintenir l’auto-injecteur en place pendant 10 secondes.
4. Faire un massage à l’endroit où vous avez effectué
l’injection afin d’accélérer la dispersion du
médicament. 5. Jetez l’aiguille dans un contenant pour les
produits représentant un danger biologique. Si un tel contenant
n’est pas disponible courber l’aiguille sur une surface dure
et jetez la dans un endroit sécuritaire. |
